TIP charts

This was our first attempt at a TIP chart. Firstly we draw a bike and labelled it's parts.
After that with a buddy and a felt pen and a large piece of newsprint, divided into three columns, we choose a bike part and recorded what it is used for and then illustrated that part.
Our next step was to use this chart to help us write a description of a bike describing the parts and their purpose. We now hope to publish them on the iPad using Book Creator.
A fabulous first attempt Room 24! Too Clever thought Mrs Dijkstra and especially using technical language like tread, spokes and gears.

2018 Math's Week

Room 24 loved Math's Week. Each day we went onto the website and played Daily Dollar and Math's Millionaire. We were very close at guessing how many lollies there were in Mrs Madden's jars.

Below we are playing Dots and Boxes - a fun game which challenged us to think about strategy. 

Mrs Dijkstra read us the picture book "Each Orange has 8 Slices" Each page posed a mathematical problem which we tried to solve. We talked about what strategy we might use. 

Fractions

As an introduction to Fractions we had a Bus Stop activity.

 We drew a line on a shot glass with vivid's marking half, a quarter, three quarters and full. We used our drink bottle to make and drink the amounts.

 We were given a ball of dough and asked to find half of it. 

Some of us used the scales to check. 

 We were given a ball of wool and asked to make it as long as the table and then find half of that length. 

 We were asked to take a handful of pasta and then to find half of that amount.

 We were given 4 squares and cut them in half in different ways and used the shapes to make the letter T and M and a rocket.

Koru Cross Country

Last Friday the Koru Whanau held their first Cross Country. The Year 2's had to be very patient as we were last to run. Everyone had a go and JayRett and Amelia  were placed and received ribbons. Well done Room 24!

Stretching Sentences

For Story Writing last week Mrs Dijkstra gave as a long strip of card and half a page of stickers. We wrote a sticker story by firstly thinking of an animal and then described it using two adjectives. Next we told what it did, where, when and why. The purpose was to write an interesting story by adding in and adding on, more detail. We not only stretched our sentence, we also stretched our brain to think and elaborate on our original idea. 

Publishing our Story writing

We wrote descriptions about Harold - the giraffe from the Life Education caravan. Mrs Dijkstra has a soft toy version. We used adjectives to make a clear picture in the readers mind. Mrs Varga made yellow cones for us, which we used to make a giraffe. We published our stories using Book Creator on the iPad which was printed and laminated and placed on our giraffe.

We wrote similes about the colour red by comparing it to something else. Mrs Dijkstra, Mrs Zhu and Mrs Kirke helped us, so that we could publish on a balloon. Luckily, not one popped! They are now on display in our room.

PTA Tile

These are some of the children's art work which will be used to make into a mug, a coaster or a magnet if you are able to and wish to support this PTA Fundraiser. We drew simple cats and coloured in sections with contrasting colours. The felts were great for making the colours vibrant.
