Science Experiments

This week we carried out a few science experiments. These are the ones we did in our class.
We experimented with Static Electricity. A big thank-you to Mrs Cammell for lending us the PVC pipes. We also looked at Optical Illusions, viewing some on line and then seeing if we could get the fish in the bowl and the bird in the cage. Lastly we made Sherbet so we could see another chemical reaction. We discussed what we see, think, and wonder. Lastly we commented on the taste and viewed on line how sherbet works. Science was fun.

An Eventful Week - Part 1

Last week in Koru Assembly we performed three Elastic Skipping Rhymes. A big thank-you to Amelia, Tianlu and Annie for taking the time to make elastics using loom bands. This has been a very popular thing to do in our room.

Mrs Jing and Mrs Kirke and Annie are all working together to problem solve how to best use the function line to program Cubetto.

Fractions

As an introduction to Fractions we had a Bus Stop activity.

We drew a line on a shot glass with vivid's marking half, a quarter, three quarters and full. We used our drink bottle to make and drink the amounts.

We were given a ball of dough and asked to find half of it.

Some of us used the scales to check.

We were given a ball of wool and asked to make it as long as the table and then find half of that length.
We were asked to take a handful of pasta and then to find half of that amount.

We were given 4 squares and cut them in half in different ways and used the shapes to make the letter T and M and a rocket.

Stretching Sentences

For Story Writing last week Mrs Dijkstra gave as a long strip of card and half a page of stickers. We wrote a sticker story by firstly thinking of an animal and then described it using two adjectives. Next we told what it did, where, when and why. The purpose was to write an interesting story by adding in and adding on, more detail. We not only stretched our sentence, we also stretched our brain to think and elaborate on our original idea.

Cubetto

Cubetto is a wooden Robot in the shape of a cube, that the children construct a code for, in order to program it. Children use tiles positioned on a board that instructs the robot to move over and along a mat to numerous interesting destinations. Thanks to Mrs Michael's who assisted the children with using this new mat recently introduced.

Pink Shirt Day

On Friday May 18th it was Pink Shirt Day. Children were able to wear pink to help celebrate this event that promoted kindness. We watched "Oat the Goat" on You Tube- a powerful and wonderful digital story that encourages kindness which resulted in making new friends.

Coding using the Osmos

This week with assistance from our lovely parents, we all got started with Osmo Coding for the first time this year. The challenge is to guide Awbie ( a playful character) who loves eating strawberries on a tree shaking, strawberry- munching adventure by giving him commands using the coding blocks. Such fun!!

Self Potraits

We have now finished our self portraits. We painted inside the outline with skin coloured paints and collaged the background using three different shades of blue. We glued on wool for the hair and our sunglasses illustrate what we did in the holidays. We also used pastels to complete our faces.
We all look gorgeous!

Ice breaker Jelly Bean Activity

Room 24 began the year with some Ice Breaker activities. We were given some plastic jelly beans. We choose one which was colour coded to a sentence starter. We told our buddy about our family, our holidays, what we liked to play and what we are good at. We learned a lot about each other.
